Escondido car accident lawyers will usually admit that reducing DUI’s is an important decision for most cities. In 2008, a 19-year-old male driving a pickup truck led police on a wild chase through several residential streets in Escondido. The driver eventually lost control of the truck on Rose Street near Riva Lane, rolled over, and came to a stop in the middle of the street. Luckily, no one was seriously injured in this car crash. The young man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and felony evading arrest.
One of the oldest cities in San Diego County, Escondido, sadly, has had its share of traffic accidents. Car accident injury and fatality statistics released in 2007 by the California Office of Traffic Safety ranked Escondido third highest among 52 cities of similar size in alcohol-related accidents per vehicle mile. Escondido also ranked high in several other categories. It was number one in deaths and injuries caused by drunken drivers under age 21, and it ranked fourth in hit-and-run related injuries. Overall, the city was ranked fourth out of 52 for its rate for traffic-injuries.
Escondido obviously had a problem with young drivers who were operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Driving while under the influence is a major cause of traffic accidents and personal injuries across the nation.
Escondido’s local police statistics dovetail with those compiled the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). The agency reported that in 2006, 11 people were killed and 911 were injured in Escondido car collisions. DUI car accidents resulted in five fatalities and 107 personal injuries. In addition, five pedestrians were killed and 54 were injured in traffic accidents. And motorcycle accidents killed one injured 33 in the city.
Police say traffic safety in Escondido has improved since 2005. They attribute driver’s license/DUI checkpoints and increased seat-belt enforcement in bringing down the number of injury accidents–by more than 20 percent from 2005 to 2008. The city has also raised its DUI enforcement ranking. In 2007, Escondido arrested 911 drunken-drivers or 1.06 percent of all its licensed drivers (compared to 0.8 percent of licensed drivers for the average city). Escondido ranked 47 out of 52 cities in DUI enforcement (a high ranking means more enforcement).
These encouraging numbers reflect what can be accomplished to reduce Escondido car crashes with better traffic enforcement efforts.
